From Labeling Credit Cards to Building a Better Spending System
Hi! I'm Jonah. The founder of Opti.
When my wife Lydia and I first got married, we were two young professionals with big dreams and limited travel budgets. We shared one goal above all else: we wanted to see the world. But between entry‑level salaries and everyday expenses, that dream felt far away.
So I did what any type‑A accountant and natural maximizer would do. I dove headfirst into the world of strategic credit card rewards. Every grocery run, utility bill, and tank of gas became part of a larger puzzle I was determined to solve. Those points turned into plane tickets and hotel stays. Hawaii, Italy, Utah, Washington, Maine - all memories that would have been much harder to afford without optimization.
But while I loved the game, it didn’t come as naturally to Lydia. Each month, we found ourselves missing out on points simply because we weren’t using the right cards at the right times. She eventually started labeling her cards with stickers: gas, dining, online shopping, anything to make the system easier. It worked, but it wasn’t elegant. And it certainly wasn’t scalable.
That’s when it hit me. If Lydia, smart, organized, and financially responsible, still found this overwhelming, how many other people were leaving money on the table? Why should anyone need an accounting degree or a label maker to get the most out of their spending?
That realization is exactly why we built Opti.
We wanted a simple, reliable way to ensure no rewards were wasted, no credits forgotten, and no points earned inefficiently. We wanted to give people the same sense of financial freedom we felt without the administrative headache.
Opti exists because maximizing your life shouldn’t be complicated. We’re building the tool we wish we had back then so everyone can travel more, spend smarter, and stop leaving money behind.
